Fairy Dress

I've been looking online for a fairy dress and shoes to complete my Halloween costume. Haven't come across anything and it's kinda late now to buy something online for shipping.

Then I remember that I have a dress at home that could work. It's like this, but olive green:

And much shorter! It was short to begin with (probably 6 inches shorter than the picture), but then I washed and dried it and it shrunk. so. much. Basically, you can just see the bottom of my ass cheeks in that. But I'm thinking if I want the light, frilly, fairy look I can layer a sheer dress on top or a sheer skirt beneath it or something. I think it could work!

Now I'm debating between flip flops or the kind of sandals that have wraps that go up your calves. Hmm...

And my hair! How to do my hair? This is gonna be fun!

Fairy Wings

I've been looking for some nice fairy wings for a while now. I definitely did not want the cheap, glittery wings you see at CVS. Not only do they look tacky, but the straps always show. I did some research and found some gorgeous wings online that were handcrafted by artisans, but my god, they were so expensive, ranging from $80 - $400!

The last one was my favorite, but they're all too pricey - way more than I want to spend on a Halloween costume. But then I found a really nice, handmade one on eBay... that I forgot to bid on! I noticed an hour after the fact that it had ended with no bids. Thankfully, I was able to email the seller and got an immediate response back, so I got these wings here for only $25 (shipping was $7). They attach with a harness in the back, so no straps shown. Yay!

I love the shape and the slight shimmery-ness of it. The seller offered a lot of different color choices, but since I don't know my outfit yet, I opted for the good-with-anything opalescent white. I can't wait to get them!

ful Peabody Mini-Sling

I saw a girl the other day with a sling backpack. She looked really cute in it and it reminded me how much I miss the one I used to have. It was a deep red Gap bag, with black details. It was very handy and stylish; I brought it everywhere. Plus, since a sling backpack goes more with my casual/sporty style than purses, I decided to get one:

I received it yesterday and the first thing I thought was "woah, it's small!" And though it is a lot smaller than my previous Gap bag, the size ends up being just perfect for my petite frame. My only worry is that one of the zippers got a bit stuck when I was trying it out last night and instead of zipping, it left an open gap. I had to unzip and zip back up a few times really fast for it to close properly. I hope this is just because it needs to be broken in. I'll keep an eye on it. Good thing eBags has a great return policy.

Halloween

This year will be the first year that I really "go all out" for Halloween. Usually I just throw on a wig or fake blood and pretend to be something, but not this year!

I'm going to be either a fairy or an elf. I just bought 2 pairs of prosthetic ear tips from Aradani Costumes (by the way, they have great costume pieces!)

I also picked up some flesh paint and spirit gum for the ears. Don't they look so realistic?

Now, if I'm going to be a fairy, what I really need are wings. I've found some gorgeous, irridiscently light wings online, but they're like $80+. The cheap, glittery kind you'd find at CVS are everywhere, but I'd prefer something unique and gorgeous. There's a pair on eBay that I'm eyeing, but it'll be $37. Still debating it.

On a side note, I also got some Gel Silicone Nipple Covers from Sense Lingerie. I hate wearing bras, but sometimes you just can't go out braless without saying "Hi!" to the world. I had been using these sticky paper covers, but I've been going through them like crazy. The Gel Silicone ones can be used 100 times plus they have great reviews! I can't wait to get them.

And back to the Halloween thing, I need an outfit... I hope I can find a nice, frilly dress. I'm debating between flip flops or the kind of sandals with ribbon that wrap up your legs. Hmm...

500GB External Hard Drive

I'm running out of space on my laptop, which has a measly 40GB (of which 8GB are taken by the system).

So I'm in the market for an external hard drive, and am eyeing this baby:

7200 rpm is VERY FAST, and 500GB is more than I'll ever need.

I also want a new digital camera and digital media player (iPod Touch or Zune), but one thing at a time now.

New Boots

Got these new boots over the weekend from Shoe Pavilion. They were priced $99.99, on sale for $59.99, and with their buy one get one 1/2 off deal (my friend got a pair), they were only about $30!

They're black suede and super comfy. I almost got the cocoa one, but we both decided that once I put them on, the contrast between the fur and the suede was just too much along with everything else that was going on (buckles, fur, lacing).

Introduction

So I'm 25. Is that young or old? I really don't know. I feel too old at times to have the urges that I do, but since they're natural, aren't they then age-appropriate? I'm over thinking this.

It's all so new.

Much has happened this past year. I became an adult. At 25.

People always talk about how you can lose yourself in a relationship. I didn't really know what that meant until we were forced to spend the past 8 months apart.

I've been with him since I was 18, and it wasn't until nearly 7 years later that I realized that I wanted other things. That I could do and be other things. That it was okay--I would be okay--without him.

7 years in Los Angeles and everything I did was with him and for him. There was so much I didn't do because I was comfortable. And safe. And lazy.

Yet without him around, I've had to go out. Meet people. Make friends. As corny and cliched as it may be, I'm beginning to find myself. It's only just started, and I couldn't be more excited.

My Favorite Local Plants

I have a love-hate relationship with spring. Being a plant lover, I absolutely adore the new foliage and blossoms. Being a seasonal allergy sufferer, I absolutely deplore it. Thankfully, I'm also somewhat of a masochist so a few weeks of congestion and uncontrolled sneezing is worth it for all the new flowers!

And when it comes to flowers and plants, Los Angeles has more than its fair share. Thanks to the popularity of wide sidewalks, open lawns, and great year-round weather, there's an abundance of plantlife everywhere you look. Plus, the variety is amazing! There are plants here that I've never seen or even heard of when I was growing up on the East Coast. Here are a few of my favorite plants that you can find just walking around my neighborhood in Hollywood:

Bottlebrush

This is a tree with very unique blossoms. It took me a while to find a picture of it since I didn't know what it was called. I was searching for "pipe cleaner tree" and "duster tree." It's called the Bottlebrush tree, and the name perfectly describes the red blossoms! Now that it's spring, the flowers are everywhere!

Bajafairydusty

The Baja Fairy Duster looks a bit like the Bottlebrush, but the flowers are more in a fan shape instead of a brush. Still very striking!

Strawberrytree

It's a Strawberry Tree! Here's another tree that took me forever to try to figure out what it was. There's a couple growing near an elementary school here. One day I walked by and stepped on one of the "strawberries." It was very soft and pulpy. I noticed a few on the ground, and they looked exactly like lychees, but once you touch the skin, you realize how thin and soft it is (not like lychees at all). After some Googling, I learned it was called a Strawberry Tree because some think the berries look like strawberries. (not poisonous, but not tasty either)

Jacaranda

During spring, one of the most breathtaking scenes in Los Angeles is staring down a street that's lined with these Jacaranda trees. All you'll see is a wave of lilac-colored blossoms. There's not a leaf in site! These trees are absolutely gorgeous, and if you walk under one on a windy day, the resulting shower is so peacefully surreal.

Horsetail

Many people have these Horsetail stalks as border plants lining their front lawns, walkways, fences, or just in a bunch out on the sidewalk. They look like mini bamboo trees and come up to about mid-thigh, with each stalk being no thicker than my pinky. Something about them seems really simple, modern, and classy. I've seen then used in a lot of restaurants in window boxes and around fountains.

Aloevera

Imagine just walking down the sidewalk, minding your own business, and then--WHAM!--you run into one of these. There are several large "wild" aloe vera plants in my neighborhood. They seem pretty old and are HUGE, thick, and look rather menacing with their serrated edges and pointy tips. It belies the juicy, wet goodness inside.

The rest are some of my favorite flowers that grow around here. There are many wild (or city-planted) bushes on every corner. In fact, there's a very pretty Wild Iris bush that grows just around the corner from a rather dull subway station. I choose 3 different colored hibiscus, but in fact, these flowers are everywhere and in a wide variety of colors. I love the traditional red ones, and there's a gorgeous orange bush around here also.

And of course, you can't talk about plants in LA without the striking Birds of Paradise!
